Me and hubby, an astrological fatal attraction?!

Question: I was at Barnes and Noble today looking at an astrology book on matchmaking. It said that my hubby and I would be a "fatal attraction". Is this bad?

First, please understand I've been doing astrological charts for more than 25 years. Although one must use math to use astrology, astrology is not science. It is more like philosophy, psychology, or other disciplines that require a belief system. There are rules in astrology, but these rules are synergistic.

I'm sure you've heard stories of "bad" psychologists. They are out there. They take principles, perhaps over-simplify them, or over-generalize them, and fail to take into account 1.) all the elements of a person's character and most importantly, 2.) their own deficit of knowledge--that is, they are incapable of acknowledging what they do NOT know. Perhaps the worst trap for any discipline are the people who forget that what they do NOT know is always the most important factor in a given situation.

Blah, blah, blah, right?

OK, disclaimers in place, you've picked up a book written by someone who is promoting the over-simplified, over-generalized approach of astrology which is essentially nothing more than a parlor game. It sells books. People like simple things, even when simple is wrong.

The book you've browsed likely bases it's "reading" on the sun sign only, upon which it is entirely too simple to judge the success or failure of any relationship.

The simplest level of astrology upon which you can make a judgment would involve the sun sign, the ascendant, and the moon sign. Suddenly, instead of 144 options for matches of people (12 x 12), one has 2,985,984 options (12 x 12)(12 x 12)(12 x 12), but even working with these 3 elements, one has only a very limited perspective. Actually, because the ascendant can help one make guesses about house placement of the sun and moon, there are more than 3 million options. Anyways, I can make some meaningful remarks if I have just these 3 elements, but for me, without knowledge of the ascendant and 9 planets, it's fairly limited.

By providing the month, day, and year, you allow us to make good guesses about the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, as well as lunar nodes. One would need to have the time of birth and location to determine the moon and ascendant (and therefore house placement).

Looking at the data available from the info you've provided, I can tell you that there's a sextile between the 72 Venus and the 74 Mars and a trine between the 72 sun and the 74 Venus, both of which are very strong indicators of a successful relationship.

Just a cursory evaluation of the two charts doesn't scream "fatal attraction" to me. There is some friction, some opposition, but these qualities are necessary for a healthy relationship, necessary for one to grow and develop.

Be very careful looking to astrology for answers in your relationships. Typically, and unfortunately, people who claim to be astrologers are often only looking to tell someone what s/he wants to hear, or they are outright quacks. Some may be well-meaning quacks, but they are quacks, nevertheless.

Anyone or any astrological method that fails to take into account the real mathematical elements for all the basic planets is best avoided.

Never, ever place any stock in something that tells you something like "Cancer and Pisces get along great, but Cancer and Gemini just can't make it." Those types of generalizations are always the easy mark for scam/bs/parlor game.

Yes - the makeup sex will be great - but you get tired of fighting.

no, as much as I like reading Horoscopes, my science teacher, who also teaches astronomy and anatomy and phsyiology, says that signs really only affect you to the .000000000000000000000000000000000000000... and further

No, but I feel sorry for your husband for marrying such a gullible person. Grow up.

It looks like your only going by horoscopes. You should really study astrology. Just going by the persons sun sign alone is not very accurate try www.astro.com its free web site full of astrology info.

Not necessarily! My hubby & I match your sun signs, and we make the best of our differences. Capricorns love to listen, and Geminis love to talk, don't they?

Well, "fatal" means to die...and that don't sound good.

You can't base your marriage on what the stars say...or horoscopes...Cosmo Magazine..etc. Apparently you love each other or would not have gotten married in the first place.

I'm a Sagittarius and my hubby is a Pisces. Everything everywhere says that we are a bad match, even chinese zodiac! And we have had our fair of bad times that we have weathered but in the last couple of years, we have been closer than ever (been together 11 years now) I think if you put too much stock into it, anything can make it bad!

I use this one a lot. Still a favorite way to answer.

I got this from Eric Idle's (of Monty Python fame) book "Around the States in Eighty Days"
He wrote on day 51,

"It's my wife's birthday. I have now been with her more than half her life. Poor thing. She must be a saint. But a Scorpio. So watch it. According to that ridiculous bollocks called Astrology — a pseudo nonsensical science if ever there was one — Aries and Scorpios never get along. Well 26 years says crap. If people want to go on believing that the whole world is divided into twelve, based on astronomical observations that are two thousand years out of date, then that's up to them. The constellations are now no longer overhead in the same place as they are supposed to be and everyone knows the lowest peg on a newspaper and the first job they give to newcomers is writing the astrology column. Still people persist in believing in this nonsense despite all evidence, which shows mankind's urge to believe in something, no matter what, is very strong, and makes it easy for all those horrible men with bad hair in bad suits on TV to make their millions."

Since no one has control of the day they are born it makes astrology bigoted, akin to racism. There is no evidence that birth-date determines personality.

Astrology can and has been tested. It fails to do better than chance. Don't let a ancient, made-up, bigoted, and unproven concept be used against you. Believe in free thinking. Believe that you can take control of your own life.
