How do you know which of your houses a planet is transiting through?!

Question: It seems to be different for everyone.

Answers: It seems to be different for everyone.

You can always keep track of your transits with most astrology programs.

What would be a better way, is just to remember the degrees and signs of your house cusps and then find what degree and sign a planet you're trying to keep track of the transits of, is in at this very moment (which is obviously different to your natal planet's position)

For example, in december last year, Jupiter went into my 1st house. Which is about 3° into Sagittarius. Ever since I've been gaining and losing weight (I'm adding the losing weight because Pluto is transiting through my 1st house as well, and has been since I started losing a lot of weight) Jupiter through the 1st is well known to let people gain weight. In a natal chart, a Jupiter in the 1st house, or conjunct to the rising, generally tells astrologers that person has a severe tendency to have a lot of weight (obesity is more of a Jupiter-Neptune thing, but that's another story)

My 1st house is around 3° Sagittarius, my 2nd house is around 7° Capricorn, 3rd house 15° Aquarius, 4th house 0° Aries and so on... so just looking at the planetary positions for the day can already tell me which house they are in. And the general movement they make can also tell me how long they're going to be in that house.

For example; at this moment, there are a lot of planets (and luminaries) transiting through my 1st house. The sun is around 17° Sagittarius, because the sun travels at about 1° per day, it's going to be there for roughly another 20 days (good for my image ^_^), the moon is 27° Sagittarius. It'll be in my 2nd by the same time tomorrow because the moon travels at about 13° per day and it stays in one sign for about 2 days and a half. Mercury is 13° Sagittarius, also in my 1st. Mercury travels at about roughly 1°30 a day, so I suspect it will be in the 1st for at least about another 10 to 12 days. Venus, 5° Scorpio is in my 11th and will be moving into my 12th in about 2 weeks, mars - currently retrograde at 8° Cancer - is going to move over my 8th house cusp into my 7th house very soon, Jupiter is - as I said before - in my 1st house, currently conjuncting transit Pluto at 28° Sagittarius. They're both going to stay in my 1st house for another few months, so I will be actively gain and lose a lot of weight. I should take advantage of the fact that they're both conjunct at the moment to start another diet, with Jupiter on an object like Pluto it will be bound to have the opposite effect from what it has been having for a long time. Or I might just gain weight and keep on feeling hungry... Saturn is in my 9th house at 8° Virgo, Uranus in my 3rd at 14° Pisces, Neptune also in my 3rd at 17° Aquarius, etc...

So basically, all you have to do is remember your own house cusps, then look at the transits for the day. Then you know which of your houses a planet is transiting through.

Transits are the planetary positions as they appear in the sky today.

Your houses are based on your natal chart, with the cusp of the 1st house being your ascendant. It is different for everyone.

You can go back to your astro.com page and do an extended chart drawing to include transits.

There are two good books on transits, one by Sakoian and Acker, the other Planets in Transit by Robert hand.

Astro.com bases it's forecasts on the transits, slow moving planets show long range and longer lasting influences. These are available under the free horoscope section.

You can also purchase your own ephemeris from your local bookstore (barnes and noble or hastings carry them in the new age section, under astrology). You look at the degree and sign the planet is in, then you look at your chart to see where it falls.

A good set of starting books is "The only way to learn astrology" series by March & McEvers. Excellent tools. I used to teach starter classes using these as reference books for my students.
