For basic astrology, tthey say that the most compatible signs stay in the same element (fire, earth, air, water) or the same type (fixed, cardinal, mutable)
Fire - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Earth - Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Air - Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Water - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Cardinal - Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn ("leaders")
Fixed - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius ("stubborn")
Mutable - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces ("changeable")
However...
The best way to judge compatability isn't just with your "main" sign (also known as Sun Sign -- the one everybody knows, that you see in your newspaper horoscopes etc.) That sign is only one aspect of your personality -- it's where the Sun was when you were born. There's still all the other planets to consider, and each one has a meaning/personality aspects, same as the Sun. This is why not everyone fits their sign perfectly.
I would suggest doing some google searches for "natal charts" (or "birth charts") and have yours done. Even a computer program will still produce decent results. I posted a source at the bottom that offers free compatability reports if you input both birthdays. Please note though, this will only be acurate if you have the correct time of birth (to know the exact position of planets at the time.)
Cancers and Capricorns should NEVER date! Capricorns are attracted Geminis but they need to work hard at maintaining a relationship. Capricorns are best compatible with Taurus', Virgos, Libras and Scorpios. Capricorns should not date, that is too much perfection in one relationship! That is all I know. Yes, I am a Capricorn
