I think it means that something that everyone else is okay with, you shouldn't find good enough. You should want someting to be better than others do.

It means that people tend to focus to much on first impressions and outside appearances. It you want to find the truth look deeper. You know that song by Staind? "I'm on the outside, I'm lookin' in. I can see through you. See your true colors."? Do that. Look within people, past their outward appearances, and find the truth. Shakespeare wrote countless plays on this topic: appearance vs. reality. Don't be fooled by the appearance. Go with your git inscincts, and be true to your feelings.
