While Hercules was busy fighting the multi-headed monster, Hydra, the goddess Hera, who did not like Hercules, sent the Crab to distract him. In fact, it is very faint with no stars brighter than 4th magnitude. the first answerer seems to be right but i have another theory. crabs can be like a cancer being so crabby. Cancer people are often emotional and moody. so with their emotional behavior they can seem like quite the cancer. it can be a disease for some to have to deal with that.
