Milmom, Polly and Star_tlr. These are great answers! I will tell you now, this is going to be a hard choice to pick the "winner"!

Hi Catwoman,
Thanks for posting the question again.
Like Milmom, there were no computers … or at least home computers … when I started studying astrology and it would take quite a few hours just to do the mathematical calculations to construct a birth chart. Then there was all the progressions and transits to work out. Nowadays, you enter a birthdate into the computer and the chart is calculated in a matter of seconds. It would take me a number of days to interpret a chart in the old days. Again now, a computerized interpretation can take seconds.
Computers make it more fun because you can analyze and try different ideas/hypothesis through seeing instant results on the screen. Maybe the only sad thing about this is that students of the subject may take the lazy way and get the computer to do it all for them without a basic understanding of how it is all worked out.
Astrology was perhaps the first ‘psychology’ in that it provided an early means for understanding human nature. Our ancestors observed how the nature and cycles of the planets corresponded to nature and cycles of human experience. Ancient astrologers focused on the good/bad or ‘malefic’ planets, evil aspects and malevolence signs. Nowadays astrologers look on tense aspects as challenges to work through. We take a more modern psychological approach to our interpretation of charts and we try to evaluate the psychological and spiritual growth of the individual.
In the 60’s and 70s the field of humanistic astrology was born, courtesy of Dane Rudhyar. By the end of the 20th century, astrologers/psychologists were exploring how Jung’s psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavoural and other models could be integrated into a new ‘astropsychology’.
Which brings me to Chiron. When I first started studying astrology Chiron had only just been discovered and I could get little information on its interpretation. Now information on this comet is widely available and quite fascinating in conjunction with the history of astrology. Because Chiron in our charts points to where we have healing powers as a result of our deep spiritual wounds. Chiron was the wounded healer who prayed to the gods to let him die. Coinciding with Chiron’s discovery in 1977 was a surge of interest in New Age healing and holistic therapies. Looking to Chiron as the wounded healer in our charts, we must face issues of low self-esteem and feelings of incompetence and face up to our shortcomings in the area Chiron falls. So as society and our spiritual/psychological understanding changes, so astrology advances.
So yes, in the way we draw up our charts and interpret our charts, a lot has changed over the last twenty or thirty years and it will keep changing. That’s why I could never get bored with the subject!
Polly
