Aquarius is a very complicated sign, that's for sure.
On one hand, they're very friendly, outgoing in a laid-back kind of way, attract lots of friends, independent and they believe everyone is equal and deserves to be treated as such. Aquarius is a very people-oriented sign.
When it comes to what's going on inside the Aquarian, that's where things get crazy. I mean, the inside is so crazy that it makes them visibly insane, wierd, eccentric, or whatever word you decide to describe them with. They are very interested in human kind as a whole, and love humanity as a whole. This is an intellectual sign, and therefore isn't very in touch with their emotional side. Aquarians are often seen as cool and unemotional. It's not that they don't have emotions, they just can't think of ways to express them. They usually rationalize their emotions and don't display how they're feeling.
Since Aquarians are so involved and interested in each and every human out there, they want to get to know everything about them. Afterall, Aquarius's key phrase is "I Know." So an Aquarius will ask you all the questions in the world to try and understand you, or they'll just observe you and find out everything they wish to know by watching your actions and reactions. However, when some one tries to get close to or make a deep connection with an Aquarius, they scare off. They love their freedom and feel very tied down and restricted and vunerable if they open themselves up and let everyone know everything about them.
Another way to look at this is by keeping the planets that rule Aquarius in Mind. We'll start with Saturn since that is what Aquarius's original ruler was (prior to the discovery or Uranus). Saturn is a very cool, logical, structured, controlling energy (it's also the ruler of Capricorn, and is also a higher level of the intellectual planet of Mercury, the god Saturn was also a good friend of Mercury). Saturn gives Aquarius the cool, logical, intellectual qualities and makes them do well under structure and control.
Aquarius's new ruler is Uranus, the most eccentric planet in our solar system (both physically and symbolically). It's all about reform, originality, technology, rebelliousness, and change. Uranus is also a higher octave of Mercury. This is the planet of genius (but remember what they say, there's a fine line between genius and insanity).
So with the factors of these two ruling planets in mind, we can kind of see an inner conflict in Aquarius. They've got the urdge for control ans structure, but at the same time they want to rebel, reform, and be as wierd as possible. This often equates to Aquarians having wierd daily routines that they depend on, with breaking the status quo and such in between.
Also, both Saturn and Uranus are very cool, intellectual energies.
If you want to get close to an Aquarian, DO NOT SMOTHER THEM. Allow them as much freedom as possible. Be very patient, and intellectually stimulate them. Over time, they'll put down their guard and with a gentle probing hand, and willing Aquarian friend, they will probably share their feelings and be welcome to advice. Be very discreet, and let them make the final decision themselves. If they want to open up, they will, but you might need to bring it up. Help make these friendly, people loving creatures feel appreciated, and you will get brownie points for this sign. Respect their independence, equality, and freedom, and they'll love you and most likley open up to you.
