Answers:

Two planets are "conjunct" if they occupy approximately the same place in the zodiac. Being in the same "place" means they are within about 8 degrees of each other (up to 10 if the Sun or Moon is involved). Some astrologers use much tighter orbs.

Planets that are conjunct seem to blend their energies. They "come from the same place." To the individual with a conjunction in his or her natal chart, the two energies are integrated and may feel inseparable. Conjunctions do not "divide" the circle into different portions, as do all other aspects. (For example, oppositions divide the circle into two parts and squares divide the circle into parts.) Thus, "the circle is unbroken" and there is a wholeness implicit in a conjunction. The planets generally do not interfere with each other's expression (although Saturn can slow down the expression of the other planet's energies).

Two "conjoined" planets will usually be in the same sign, and thus they will share both the same element and quality. They often also occupy the same house of the chart. When two planets are close enough to be conjunct, but occupy different signs, it is called a "dissociate" or "out of sign" conjunction. When a conjunction straddles the cusp of a sign and/or the cusp of a house, there is a less complete fusion of the two planets' energies. They will still blend together, just less so.

A conjunction can produce favorable or unfavorable results for planetary partnerships, and all depends on the planet, sign and house in which this planetary partnership forms.
an aspect such as "Sun conjunct Mars" means that Ego and Energy are working together.

When three or more planets are in conjunction, a stellium is formed. Stelliums can occur in the same or adjacent signs. Stelliums produce intense energy and are usually very significant factors in your psychological makeup.

Oppositions occur when two planets are 180 degrees apart. Essentially an opposition occurs when two planets are on opposite sides of the circle. Because of this positioning, the planets are "staring" at each other. This aspect is another kind of partnership aspect, which can produce a feeling of complementarity or enmity. There is a strong and dynamic interchange of energies occurring, when planets form a complementary pairing. Just think of the Taoist concept of yin-yang, which embraces all polarities such as male-female, positive-negative and birth-death. With oppositions, there is usually a common factor that unites the planets, and that is that they usually fall in the same modality. Hence, most oppositions generally occur between cardinal-cardinal, fixed-fixed or mutable-mutable planets such as: Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-Sagittarius, Leo-Aquarius or Virgo-Pisces. However, sometimes, we see oppositions between different modalities and this happens when an opposition occurs between pairing such as Moon in Gemini at 29 degrees and Sun in Capricorn at 0 degrees. Notice how the planets are within an orb that makes the opposition effective, but the planetary signs, modes and elements have very little in common. The orb in this case is 1 degree from being exact, and therefore the energy exchange between these planets is quite strong. In the first series that I pointed out, in which the signs are within the same modalities, you can see that the opposition occurs between fundamentally compatible elements. In the latter case the opposition may be a bit harder to integrate because the planets share very little in common in terms of modality or element.

Usually the challenge for opposing planets in like modalities is to blend the energies of the signs and elements, and houses. When the planets are in the same mode the conflict usually occurs when each planet wants to express its energy pattern at the same time that the other planet does, but not in a cooperative manner. Of all the oppositions that can occur the most problematic are planets that are forming an opposition in the fixed modality, which is Taurus-Scorpio and Leo-Aquarius. The very nature of the fixed modality is the desire to maintain a constant and steady expression, which frequently can become stubbornness and rigidity. Hence comprise is usually difficult, since the expressed energy is fixed. Cardinal-Cardinal oppositions, such as Aries-Libra and Cancer-Capricorn, tend to produce a feeling of conflicting interests, since both planets are action oriented initiators, frequently resulting in simultaneous initiation of conflicting projects. For the Mutable-Mutable pairs, such as Gemini-Sagittarius and Virgo-Pisces, indecisiveness and lack of follow through is the main threat and, once again, initiation of conflicting projects are begun but abandoned in favor of new experience or interests.
