Tuning Drums ?!

Question: Tuning Drums !?
I got a new drum kit, and only the snare drum was tuned, so i tried tuning the three toms and bass drum and didn't really like the sound!. I re tuned them and also put a towel touching the resonant head in the bass drum!. The problem is my toms all have like an annoying ringing noise after you hit them!. I think that I could tune them better, but no one really explains how to on the internet, I already know that you have to do it in like diagonal lines, and not tune lugs next to each other one after another!. How much should I tune each drum!? Should I tune the lower head to a higher equal or lower pitch than the top head!? And also how do I get a deeper sound from my drums, by deeper I mean Metallica-type sound, not identical but I want the general sound and tone to be similiar!.

Any help is appreciatedWww@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
tuning drums:
1!.loosen off all the lugs on the drum you r tuning!.
2!.tighten them all up to finger tightness at first and work in opposite sides!.
3!.Start on a lug and give it one full turn of your drum key and then do the lug opposite it,then carry on until you have done this with all lugs!.
4!.then work in half or quarter turns until you are happy with the sound or nearly happy!.
5!.strike the skin approx 1!.5" away from each lug & listen to the pitch to make sure it is even if not you can start again or adjust the lug that is not sounding rite until it matches the others!.
this is the simplest method!.
the tighestness of the top and bootom skin/head is wot affects how quickly the sound bounces back a tight top & bottom skin will give a higher pitched sound, a slack top& bottom skin will give a lower, most people will tighten the top to a comfotable playin feel & then ajust the bottom to give the sound more depth etc!.!.!.
This does take a little practice and as skins are played they stretch or lugs loosen so it is advisable to check them once every week depending on how much & howheavy you play!.If you are denting skins you may be hiiting to hard or incorrectly or may just need a thicker ply of skin!.
Metallicas sound is probably medium tight on top and fairly loose on bottom however there is a lot of drum production on big bands like this and you may find it hard to at first achieve this sound from your kit acoustically!.
choice of skin, depth of toms and the wood used in the shell of the drums will also be a large factor!.
hope this helped!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
