Quantum Leap was going to be my answer, before I opened the question and saw your details!.
Early Edition comes to mind-it is also an older show (though not as old as Quantum Leap)!. Rather than going back in time, he gets "tomorrow's newspaper, today" and is able to save people!. I thought of it when you said journalist, though (even though the character is not a journalist)!.
