Question: What is MIDI!?
so, when i get my job near the end of the summer, i want to buy a keytar off ebay!. but looking at other Y!A questions/forums/ebay descriptions/etc!. they say things like, "It doesn't have any sound in it unless you have a MIDI" or something!.
so, long question short, what is MIDI!? please be descriptive in your answer and don't just quote word for word off wikipedia!.

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface!. It's a standardized protocol for transferring musical data, such as the pitch and tone of each note!.
It should all be in a MIDI interface, which can sorta be considered a converter box for music!. You'd probably just have a MIDI in port and MIDI out port for connecting other MIDI compatible instruments!. Every MIDI compatible instrument has a MIDI interface built right in, so you should be all set if you buy one that's compatible!.
To be ultra specific, MIDI connectors are DIN 5/180° connectors!.

Ya MIDI is for sampleing its basically the set format so when you buy one of the rolands you will need to connect it to the internet and download samples if you wanna take it a step further you could buy software for the computer so you can actually make your own samples i would recommend 'Reason 4' brilliant software, only €200 - $300 its very profesional but has help for every situation you get into!. if you buy a roland you will find you need to buy alot more things with it but in the long term will help you on da way to become a top class music producer if you dont want all that hassle id recommend you jus buy a yamaha keyboard they arent experts of MIDI but still have it on the new ones!!! they also have massive sound banks like grand piano sounds and stuff like that!!!!! ;-) Hope it helps!!!!!
