Do you think that all these TV "talent" contests are a bit pointless?!

Question: Do you think that all these TV "talent" contests are a bit pointless!?
Britains Got Talent, X Factor etc!.

It seems to me that they exist for two reasons:

a) To laugh at poor deluded people who think they can sing

b) For Simon Cowell to make some cash by finding a "marketable" act

On top of that, in order to be successful an act has to have two things going for them

a) Be very young (half this years BGT finalists were only children)

b) Have a sob-story

I find it a bit insulting - I know music college graduates who could outsing any of the contestants on that show and trained dancers who could do the same, but they would be unlikely to be chosen to go through to the final because they do not have a "magic ingredient" of extreme youth or a sad story (Hamster dying etc)!.

Anyone agree!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
The reason they are on, is that
1!. They are very cheap to make
2!. People are daft enough to ring up thus giving money to production companies!.
3!. After the show, money is made from articles, features, music etc!.

Complete rubbish!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Paul Potts didnt have a sob story
Leona Lewis didnt have a sob story
The young boy who won Britians got talent didnt have1, we only found out about his back a couple of days later!.
You dont have to be young to win
Look at these winners now especially Paul Potts and Leona Lewis, where would they be now without these shows, it also gives them confidence which they may never had before
If you dont like watching them how comes you know so much about them, is it jealousy!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

You summed it up perfectly!.!.!. also add to that list they take ages to get to the finals and the winner isn't revealed until about 10 weeks after the program has started!.!.!. it uses up a lot of airtime and gathers large audiences so they don't have to bother making other programmes and investing more money into other entertainmentWww@Enter-QA@Com

i think Simon cowell can be too harsh i!.e when the Britain's got talent auditions there was a black guy who you could see had a few issues in his head maybe he was suffering from a condition to make him like that and SI'mon just made fun of him not thinking hey this guy may have a problem im bored with them now so pointless and fakeWww@Enter-QA@Com

They keep the idiots distracted - just like the red top press, just like most of the excrement coming out of Hollywood!.

Bread and circuses - then and now!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

no not at all they are there to entertain and that is just what they do top marks to the producers and if u think they are pointless why are you watching them!?
just asking !?
curious
if u do watch themWww@Enter-QA@Com

no!. i enjoy laughing at the rubbish acts!.
and if the music col grads were so good then they WOULD have the x factor!! if you want to be famous, people have to like you!.

xWww@Enter-QA@Com

They are pointless, dribble television really, but what the masses want, the masses get!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

lol then you will say why does America have all the talent but not England the talent shows are to say that england has talent too and they aren't pointlessWww@Enter-QA@Com

They're terrible programmes babe!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Absolutely!Www@Enter-QA@Com

You are probably right but I still love watching the first auditions with those poor deluded people who cant sing!.!.!.its a blast!Www@Enter-QA@Com

yes!. pointless as hell!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Weighing up all the pros and cons, I'm in favour!. Anything that keeps Cliff Richards off No 1 at XMAS!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

you could sing better than andrew johnston!?

BIG HEADWww@Enter-QA@Com

Yes!.Either these shows are :1)eroding our culture,or
2)have already eroded a part of our culture!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Well put!. You state what I have been thinking!. I'm not a great lover of The Lloyd Weber ones either on BBC- but he keeps British culture and the theatres going in London and people in jobs- so that is the good side of talent shows!. However, the Simon Cowell format is so played out now- so predictable and basically crass- it makes me cringe watching!. They are no longer natural- one sob story - fine- but everyone with a sob story- it loses the point!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Now, unfortunately worse than pointless!. And if you follow the ratings, it's beginning to show!.

All these fly on the wall programs!.!.!. not just talent shows but the jerry springer style interview equivalents like Jeremy Kyle or Trisha were really interesting and original when they first appeared!. Now, I can’t watch them!. They make me vom!.

They used to seem spontaneous and dangerous, (like live tv) but now they seem contrived & scripted - something the OP touched on!. I’d really question the morons who appear on the shows to!. They’re just humiliating themselves and allowing the media to exploit them!. Reality Tv!? Sorry, banished to the same closet as TV soaps for me!. Channel gets flicked straight away everytime!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

everybody deserves a break, some people never get it i should know i'm one of them! but they do have a good point yes there are lots of professionaly trained dancers singers ect who never get a break but then again is there any excuse for the spice girls!? i've slogged my guts out for the last 20 years, i know i'll be lucky getting full time employment never mind my temp contract being renewed and i'm skilled in all sorts of industry!. but like they say its a long walk from rack to ruin, give the people the chance to shine or perhaps even glimmer for a second!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
