I remember reading about this a few years back!. It is sooo funny!. But I guess in a way the first answer is true -- a capitalist economy thrives on consumerism: who needs 300 different kinds of toothpaste to choose from!? why do we waste enough food to feed the entire world a couple of times over!? -- our economy would crash without this kind of rampant consumerism!.
