Answers:
Pro Tools is a little over-hyped!. A lot of people jumped on the Pro Tools bandwagon because it is the most common software used in Recording Studios!. What they don't understand, is that these studios have dumped $100,000's of dollars into equipment and even more thousands into plug-ins and add-ons for Pro Tools!. They are not using the Pro Tools LE version that a lot of people get with home recording studios!.

The other thing with Pro Tools, it's a great software!. No doubt it is one of the best, if not the best!. BUT you have to know how to use it to it's full extent to get your money's worth!. People go to school for years learning Pro Tools and other recording knowledge!. It's not something you can YouTube or read a book on, to fully grasp all of it's capabilities!.

So with that being said!. Yes Pro Tools is great, but unless you are looking to invest a whole bunch of money into a Digi Icon and all the add-ons / plug ins for Pro Tools, it may not be worth money!.

There are a ton of other softwares that recording studios use!. The top 3 I recommend are Pro Tools, Cubase, and Tracktion!. Tracktion being the easiest to learn and use by far!. I recommend that for any beginner!.

As for the hardware!. You can go several options depending on your budget!. So let's start out with the lowest then get to the more expensive stuff!.

You will either need to go with (A) an Audio Inteface or (B) a Mixer with Firewire capabilities!.

USB and Firewire Audio Interfaces come with Recording Software (Pro Tools, Cubase, or Tracktion)!. The Audio Interfaces allow you to plug in your instruments and then converts the analog signal to a digital signal to get it on your computer!.

Tapco Link - $150
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/L!.!.!.
This AI has two inputs!. It comes with Tracktion!. This will allow you to plug in your microphones and other instrument!.

Tapco Link Firewired - $199
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/L!.!.!.
Same as above, but it's firewire as opposed to USB!. Firewire will give you less lag and higher quality recordings!.

Presonus Audiobox - $150
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/A!.!.!.
This has two inputs!. Comes with Cubase LE!.

Presonus Firebox - $300
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/F!.!.!.
Same as above, but it is Firewire!. More quality!.

Digidesign Mbox 2 - $450
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/M!.!.!.
If you are still stuck with Pro Tools, here is what started the craze!. The Mbox 2 has two inputs and comes with Pro Tools LE!.

USB / Audio Interfaces are good if you are only looking to record individuals and not a band!. They are limited to two inputs, so you that's two instruments at time you can record!. So you can still do a band, but you'd have to record each part separately!.

As for Mixers with Firewire capabilities, here's the best option!.

Mackie Onyx 1220 - $580
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/O!.!.!.
12 Channel Mixer with Onyx Preamps!. Still one of the best mixers on the market!. You can take it live gigs as well too!.

Mackie Onyx Firewire Card - $450
http://www!.sweetwater!.com/store/detail/O!.!.!.
This firewire card allows you to plug your mixer into your comptuer via firewire!. Firewire is great, hardly any lag, and with the Onyx Preamps the quality is very high!. This comes with the software Tracktion 2, which is awesome!. Easiest to learn / use software by far and it has great effects and fitlers!.

As for Microphones, get as many as you can!. When recording the more microphones the better!. Most microphones can be used for some application one way or another!. You definitely though want to look at getting one solid Condenser Mic for your vocals!. Then pickup different brands of Dynamic and other Condernser Mics for other instruments!. I'm not going to list a bunch out because I don't know your budget!. But stay away from USB mics!.

So you can go two routes:
1!. USB or Firewire Audio Interface, Microphones
2!. Mixer with Firewire, Microphones

That with your computer is all you need to get started!. Well of course all the necessary cables too!.

If you let me know your budget, I'd be willing to help spec out some more specific options for you!. Feel free to email me!.

Good Luck!.

PS!. Yes you'll most likely need help to learn Pro Tools!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
