Who is the absolute greatest guitar player in the world?!
Question: Funny that people just shoot out their favorite guitarist without even asking what style of music you are talking about. With so many wonderful guitarists in the world, they wouldn't be so wonderful trying to cover a style of music that's outside their comfort zone. It's like asking who the best male or female singer in the world is. There's no correct answer to either question.
As far as Carlos Santana goes...yes, he's a great player, with a unique signature style, but most people aren't aware that he didn't have a hand in writing most of the songs he's known for, such as: Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, Smooth, Oye Como Va, The Game of Love, and so on. Most professional guitarists will tell you that while they respect Santana, he’s pretty boring to listen to since he plays a very similar solo in almost every song. I do like him though, but I know there are more creative/talented guitarists out there that don't receive the national attention that Carlos does because they won't play pop songs. This sounds more hateful than I had intended and I mean no disrespect to any Santana fans out there.
If I had to name a few guitarists that could play in just about any style and do an incredible job, I'd list these:
Steve Vai
Trey Anastasio
Al Di Meola
Dolye Dykes
John Petrucci
Brian Setzer
