Okay This is the first time I've answered a question on here but I play the guitar and I really hope I can help you...Here goes.
First I'm going to give you some tips that really helped me,
Buy a guitar stand and keep your guitar beside your bed pick it up for 5 min. before you turn out the lights it helps alot!,
If you have an ear for music just start by picking out simple songs I.E. Mary had a Little Lamb,
every time you look at it play it 5 min.
Start with bluegrass it's much easier than it looks and it's really fun go buy a simple bluegrass book,
Tableture is you new best friend!
Play in front of a mirror if possible keep good posture and don't lock the joints on your fingers,
Just have fun don't worry about how good you are play for your friends and enjoy it.
Okay those are some very important tips to remember I suggest taking a few lessons from someone who's fun to be around I started taking lessons from a person who was very strict do this do that sit up straight. I took lessons from her fr a year and didn't learn hardly anything then I started taking lessons from another person and honestly learned more in a month than the whole year with my other instructer. Your instructer should be a close friend I don't take lessons anymore but I still talk to him to ask questions every now and then. Oh also It's very important to memorize each song you learn that was something that proved much better than reading it each time I played it, just learn the first measure of a song before you move on to the next practice each measure playing them together as you memorize them.

That's all I can think of for now you can learn without lessons and the main advice I hope you can follow is about memorizing each song a little at a time it was the best way of learning for me.
Even if you switch to rock or whatever later I suggest starting with bluegrass it builds you into the chords and the fret board at a slower rate try "Boil the Cabbage Down" for starters I think you'll do well practice every night and you'll get it faster than you think:) Good Luck!
