go hiking- pick up one of the local areas papers and check out the things to do around that area and get out of the house!!-
when on holiday people tend to do holiday things like tourism stuff, but that gets boring pretty fast, if you are going somewhere completely out of your comfort zone and if you are adventurous enough, befriend a streetwise local (that can be trusted of course) and get to know the real people, the real issues, the real place not the things visitors are usually sheltered from.
