JUST STAY AWAY FROM BIG NAMES!
There are a lot of "purist" that will tell you otherwise, but the market has never beeen better for "cheap" guitars.
15 years ago, if you spent less than $250, you were getting serious garbage. And $250 had a lot more meaning back then!
Why were they garbage? Horrible crafstmanship, and inferior parts, together with anchor-like wieght and horrible material choices. Many were made of plywood or MDF (medium density fiberboard, high-tech cardboard...think IKEA), they were uncomfortable to play, cuz the action was rediculously high, or the frets would cut your hands. Many times, the necks would de-laminate, so the fingerboard would actually seperate from the rest of the neck.
And, even if you got all of this worked out, including resoldering the pick-ups so they stopped their static, the guitar would go out of tune mid-song.
But today, there are a ton of decent guitars that can be had for well under $200. They have real wood bodies, often adler or popler, with excellent finishes. A $150 guitar today is probably better than a $250 guitar from 15 years ago.
There is a company called Palmer that makes a Fender Strat copy. I bought one on sale for $120 once, as a gift. The girl's guitar teacher could not get over the quality. A Fender with the same features would have been considerably more money.
There are some less expensive brands who offer good cheap stuff. A BC Rich Warlock Bronze can be had for under $100 used. Peavey makes a really good machine for the money as well. Peavey is not as famous as Gibson or Fender, but their stuff is excellent.
Getting a package deal is OK, but if you don't mind spending a little more time, you can build your own"package" for the same price or only like $50 more.
pop down to your local music store
they normally have starter packs that have everything in them u need to start, guitar, amp, tuner, strap, picks ect
these arnt normally that expensive.
what price?
I started and still use a PRS SE EG from musicians friend
Google "PRS SE EG" and find it.
*normally it goes new for $300 but MF had it on sale for $200 when I picked one up for myself. Great guitars for the price range.
