the original version of the song was actually sung from a female perspective...and the house of the rising sun was a house of prostitution...while bob dylan recorded a version in it's original form, the animals changed things around to make the house a gambling den...
although 'the house of the rising sun' is a traditional folk song (and nobody actually knows who the real composer of the song is); josh white seems to be the first artist to release a recorded version of the song (that's where eric burdon first heard it)...
