What's the strangest music you listen to?!

Question: I'm currently listening to some East Indian techno music.

Answers: I'm currently listening to some East Indian techno music.

LOL. (((Dearest Glorious))), the strangest things I listen to are links from you. Though my boyfriend would probably nominate Bulgarian singing. :-)

Lots of people think a lot of my music is weird, but it's just from other cultures. Hungary and the Balkans are especially rich for trad/other hybrids. Mitsoura (there are clips on youtube) is Hungarian trad songs with modern dance beats. Kerekes band is akin to Jethro Tull (good clips on myspace). Fanfare Ciocarlia turns the James Bond theme into something Roma. Besh o Drom and the Jani Lang Band are just brilliant.

A really fun thing (to my 'western' ears) is how east European music will use Indian pop as its 'other' for hybrids.

My computer and connection are acting up, especially with high bandwidth sites, so I can't give you direct links right now. If you're interested in this sort of things, let me know. It'll take some of the pressure off of Glorious, the current recipient of all of my Look at the Cool Thing I Just Founds. ;-)

Or use myspace to check out the band you're listening to or plenty else and start clicking on their Friends. It's a great way to find new things. I found an amazing group called Basquiat Strings that way -- their violinist is the kid sister of Fraser Fifield, one of the regulars in my CD player lately. He does jazz/trad and is touring with his quartet AND some fantastic Bulgarian musicians. (New release eagerly anticipated. :-)

But the strangest that I have in my collection? Hands down that's Tanya Tagaq, the 'Jimi Hendrix' of Inuit throat singing.

Unfortunately, the sampler there is no indication of her power live.

Either The Residents (the American band) or Qawwali music from Pakistan.

Grunge Rock. Khmer/Thai rap.

I'm really into mid to late 80s Swedish hardcore punk! Also, mexican death metal!

That sounds interesting! I didn't even know that existed, what bands?

you should probably ask 'OhDearYouDidn't' that though, she's an expert at obscure (and fabulous) music lol

I quite like Gypsy-Punk.

and Jackson and his computer band... I guess that's techno.

Pink Floyd. Currently I'm listening to Queen - Killer Queen.

My nephew's raps.

EDIT:
I really bought The Meaning of Life album back in the 80's just to listen to the music. I love this one especially. It should be required listening for all high school kids.

I've also had the Holy Grail ale. It's REALLY good.

Probably John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano.

"Prepared Piano" is a piano with screws, bolts, paper clips, cork, etc. placed at strategic points on the strings to alter the sound — sometimes so drastically that it no longer sounds like a piano, but more like a gamelan or a metallic percussion band.

I spent the morning listening to 60's folk music--mostly the Smothers Brothers, but also some Peter, Paul, and Mary and the Chad Mitchell Trio.

Okay Grit, get ready to scream....

I am a Yoko Ono fan.

Coworkers tend to be surprised when they catch me listening to Big Mama Thornton as I do research.

Moravian disco punk reggae country and western has turned me into a real fan. I can't hear enough of it.

hmmmm.... "strangest". I'll intpret that as out of the ordinary.....

so:

- Yothu Yindi (google that if you want to know more)
- a compilation called "Didjeridu Planet" (another google)

I guess I don't necessarily call it strange, but something different I listen to is Cruachan which is a Celtic Folk Metal Band.

I love gospel music even though I am an atheist.

Makai - Beneath the Mask.

Drum & Bass meets Ghost in the Shell. Totally awesome.

I love it that Big Mama Thorton got an honorable mention. as I love the blues, and I am particularly fond of the old blues classics. I hate it that so many died in poverty because of being cheated of any royalty rights. I love many different types, and it would be easier to say what I do not care for, but today I am listening to a version of this type of music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VqoxOcEq...
I often put this type of music on when I am unable to sleep, and it soothes me. My sister has spent years learning the language and is our family historian.
I just happened to find another one I love while looking around that will prove that I came from a long line of loons!

For me probably Chuck Berry, mainly because he's really not that popular anymore and hardly anyone knows who he is, but if you listen to his songs we all recognize them.
