150 for a black acoustic guitar, DG16 Fender, good deal?!

Question: Is this a good deal? I want to get my guy a guitar for his bday in march. A girl offered to sell me a Black Acoustic Fender DG16 guitar for $150. I asked her if she could go lower on the price because I hadn't planned on spending that much, she said she couldn't because it retails for $575, but she would throw in the soft shelled case for free.
I can't find this model anywhere online. Is it really $575 retail?

i cant find that model either, are you sure it even exists and its not a fake? have you seen the guitar for yourself?

I don't think it was that much retail. Also keep in mind 'suggested retail' is not what any stores charge. For example one of my guitars, the Yamaha FG720S retails for more than 400, but try to find a store out there charging that much. Everyone charges $259 plain or $279 colored. Everyone. So suggested retail is a joke. Go by standard store pricing, not the joke retail prices.

Standard price for that model? $260 new. So yes, she is asking a fair price. Question is, why is she wanting to sell? None of my guitars are or will ever be for sale. Well, I have a crappy fender acoustic I would part with, but it is an awful guitar. Generally speaking, unless the person has hit hard times? I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling when someone wants to get rid of their guitar. Makes me wonder what's wrong with it.

So what's wrong with this guitar? Well, I haven't tried out that model, but the first thing that jumps out at me is that it is laminated. At 250 bucks you can get a solid wood top. If it says 'spruce' that is a scumbag marketing tactic. It is a laminate. If on the other hand it says 'solid spruce' or 'solid cedar' that is real wood, no glued layers.

I almost never recommend a laminate for people unless it is acoustic electric and they only plan to play plugged into an amp. Laminate tops, because they are thin strips of wood glued together? Hard as a rock. They don't vibrate well. The top vibrating is what makes the sound you hear, and if it doesn't vibrate, you get muffled, quiet, muddy tone.

I suspect the owner has had enough of her laminate top and might be looking toward a solid top for an upgrade. I would suggest you not make her mistake, getting a laminate you will have to try to sell off later when you decide to go for a better sounding guitar. This one from what I understand has lacking bass presence, not very full sounding. The action is variable, sometimes on, sometimes off, kind of a crapshoot. Overall? Nothing about that guitar you can't get better and cheaper on other models.

If you are trying to find a good acoustic that is affordable, send me an email and I will do what I do for everyone. Try to help you locate a guitar that is best of it's class for your price range. At $150, that really isn't going to get much of a guitar. Around $250 you will find some VERY decent intermediates. I strongly suggest you not go below $250 or you will very likely get what you pay for.
