I am a post graduate volunteer in Ecuador. The other day, my students had questions about United States politics, so we spoke about the election. I passed photos of the 4 remaining candidates around and one boy looked at Obama, laughed and said he couldn′t be running for president of the United States. When he refused to believe it, I asked him why.
In the sincerity that only an 11 year old can voice, he looked at me and said: " he can′t be trying to be president of your country because he doesn′t look like you... he looks like me."
I can′t begin to describe the ways, subtle and not so subtle, intentional and incidental, that this man could raise our beaten down image across the world.
And, as someone invested in working with poor people, I wonder what kind of message it sends if a man that looks like them achieves the highest post in the world. It is helping me to make my kids believe in a world of possibility they never saw before.
I showed them the youtube song with Will I Am and translated the message- they love him even more!
That, among many other reasons, is why I support Senator Obama!
What will I do if im not a fan.
When I was a child I attended a campaign ralley by John F Kennedy in the 60's. His speech inspired the audience to believe that together we could change the world. He was a man who faced the same criticisms that Obama does today.. How dare a young hopeful Senator try to change the world with words of hope? When I listen to Obama speeches, I get the same feeling I did when Kennedy was in the running. Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" and we did. During his short Presidency he affected this country in ways that could never be matched. I believe that Sen Obama can inspire us in this same way. He is young (Kennedy was younger). He was "different" (He was Catholic!). He was criticized for not having enough experience. But like Obama, he knew how to put the right people in the right place to get things done. It's dangerous to have a President who thinks he (or she) knows it all. The Clintons has a very sorted past, questionable political ethics, deceptive and manipulative communications and can't seem to get people to work together. Hillary is no diplomat. She insulted Putin! Is this how her foreign policy is going to be? Obama is a diplomat, an organizer, a rational planner.
This country was founded on hope and power of the people. It's time to have a leader who is FOR the people, open communication, rights for all. Obama is the ONLY candidate who will give us all a chance to become the great country we once were.
