hi blue, i think it is just part of the American, lingo
its funny coz my teacher is a yank and shes and english teacher
and i asked the exact same question today anyways she said coz they adapted the spelling from the french and the english or something lol
its just a case of cultural differences...
my mum is irish, she calls her mother 'mam' and my dad is geordie...he also calls his mother mam
i dont know why we say these thing but what else am i suppose to call my mom
because that's how it's done in America...
