From what I know about the music industry, the Australian industry never really worked too hard in pushing its artists overseas. The bands that are legendary in Australia, with a few exceptions, are unheard of in other countries. Most people in the UK have never heard of Jimmy Barnes or Cold Chisel, yet "Khe Sanh" is a national institution of a song in Australia.
You can put the blame squarely on the heads of the record companies and entertainment agents, who never had the foresight or business sense to promote some quite stunning bands overseas.
This kind of thinking typifies Australian business in general in the 1970's and 1980's. Very insular in its ways. Like isolation was something to be proud of !! Sad.
