What's the right way to pick with your fingers on bass guitar?!

The common method is to alternate plucking the string with your index and middle finger. Most people tend to rest their thumb on top of the pick-up to keep their hand steady while playing the E string. Some people keep their thumbs there while playing the other three strings, but most move their thumbs down to lower strings when playing A, D, and G. In time you could master using your index, middle AND ring finger, but that is something only few people use, and takes a lot of practice.

In parallel with this technique, you need to drop your thumb when you pick the lower strings and lift your thumb when you pick the upper strings. Otherwords, your thumb is your reference point to guide your fingers.
