    They hurt her feet.
    I think it was just a quirky thing she started to do, and people noticed her. Much better than taking cocaine etc. which seems to be the thing now
    well its one of two things... 1, it was a new hip thing to do in the 60's.. or 2, she could only wear clown shoes due to her embarrassingly large feet.. which wouldn't have been good for tv..
    just her gimmick I think
    Hard up perhaps.
    She was so short-sighted that (in the days before contact lenses) she was told by her PR not to wear glasses, so when she went on stage she would take her shoes off and walk along the microphone leads ;which she could feel in her bare feet- and then know where she had to stand.
