Do old violins sound better than new ones?!

Question: Back in my old school the school's old violin that smelled funny, had a broken bow, and was really dusty- sounded AMAZING. I mean I bought a brand new violin and i rosined it everyday but it never had the same amazing tone as the other one. Why is that? And does that happen all the time?

yes, there really is a difference. the more "played-in" a wooden instrument is, the better the sound. like the Stradivarius instruments. they are all old, but sound so amazing. they are also easier to play, because they have such a great, easy to produce sound. so, basically, the older and more used the instrument, the better it sounds and plays.

don't believe anyone who tells you differently. i play the cello, and go to school for music, so i definitely know what i'm talking about! :)

of course it will sound the same, if it is tuned and has all the right strings and the stick thing that you use to play then it will definatly sound the same

no difference its all up to the player

of course

The general consensus is that they do sound better. That's why people pay thousands for a Stradivarius that is hundreds of years old. The tone quality is well worth it. The possibility is better craftsmanship, or that time actually makes it better. I'm a musician, but not a violinist, so I'm not really sure of the exact reasons.
Kinda cool, though.

it depends. generally, older instruments are hand crafted and more precise. it also depends on the type of wood the bridge, body, and neck are made out of. I'm pretty sure the best wood is mohagany. Most guitars and bases are either made out of maple or rosewood. I'm pretty sure the same goes for violins.

Yes, the older the violin the better! Because the more played the better sound. Of-course, some old violins may sound bad because they were abused in their past years. But violins who were well token care of sound great!! Great question too!
