I play piano, diatonic harmonica, chromatic harmonica, acoustic and electric guitar and have played a few others in the past. I've never had a lesson for anything in my life. You may be surprised to hear that chromatic harmonica was actually the biggest struggle.

I wouldn't say that I can 'just pick [it] right up and play'. Very very few musicians can, if any at all. There ARE those who are so adept with say fretted instruments that they can pick up say a banjo and instantly seem skilled with it on their first try, but many instruments are very similar to other instruments from the same family. This is skill; not natural ability.

Almost all musicians who seem like a 'gifted' 'natural' really aren't but it's the result of a good ear and a LOT of effort and years of practice. It's just that they're SO good it's hard to believe they weren't born with their ability.

yeah ive known a few people like this. they can play a tune without having heard it before, practicing, or being taught. some people are just good that way. i cant play a tune but i can draw anything

My brother can do it.. He was given guitar lessons.. but after the first week the teacher told my mother not to waste the money.. he surpassed the teacher the first day.. since then he's played everything from bagpipes to my Violin with no problems.. He can hear a song once and play it within 10 minutes by ear..
Whereas I have to struggle just to get ANYTHING resembling music to come out of an instrument..

Yes, of course that was then, not now. Such a person was my youngest brother. DEAD, June 11th, 2007. Just as I wrote that, I realized how our mother must have cried! Thank you, Gnome,
for such sudden and soberly painful revelation. Grecia.

I have three sisters who play acoustic guitar, electric guitar and harmonica. They play by ear. They had bookings for various doings. One sister stayed with it for many years after the other two quit. They were really good... not my opinion alone. The sister who stuck with it also has a singing voice people love.
Now, I have a daughter who does the same with acoustic and electric guitar and keyboard.
They seem to be able to hear a song and then play it from there.
No lessons for any of them.

Yes, my Guitar Teacher can do just that!

I have several family members who are talented like that. However, the gene missed me!!
