It can't be really expensive.

Since you are students, there are a lot of places that you'll get in for free or for a discount, like the Norton Simon museum or the Museum of Contemporary art. These places sometimes have activities specially directed at teens.

Also, in the summer, the MOCA, California Plaza and the Santa Monica Pier sponsor free concerts...there are actually hundreds of free concerts in L.A. in the summer - just look online.

For something indoors, try roller skating, ice skating, bowling, doing crafts or baking at home.

How about all of you volunteer your time for a non-profit that serves the homeless, battered women or animals? I know it doesn't seem like fun, but when people (or animals) look at you with gratitude, it is more rewarding than you can imagine.

The summer season at the Hollywood Bowl can be really reasonable if you're willing to sit in the furthest section. You have to buy tickets as soon as they go on sale. The best part is you can make your own picnic dinner to take with you to the concert.

You can take a free tour of the LA Times Printing Plant or at JPL:

Los Angeles Times Printing Plant
Los Angeles, CA
213-237-5757

Jet Propulsion Laboratory
4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109
(818) 354-4321

or look online for more information about free tours at other factories or businesses...I just entered 'los angeles free factory tour' into the google search bar.

I would also recommend you look at Huel Howser's 'California Gold' website to see if he has a list of California attractions he has visited. Many of them are free or low cost, and you can't imagine the many wonderful places and activities he has attended...

Like the Huntington Library, various California Missions, the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens in Pacific Palisades, a factory that makes 98% of all the plastic sushi (and other food) in the world...interesting places like that.

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is all the diversity. So, think of all the things you can try from other cultures, like dancing or food - and make a list of all the ones you would like to try. I would take dancing classes in Flamenco (Spain), Samba (Brazil) and Bhangra (India) and try food from Cuba, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, El Salvador, etc.

One thing you all might be interested sooner rather than later is going to college - how about you take a trip to visit all the universities in the area. You can walk around the entire campus, check out the campus bookstore, the library, the housing, and see what fun lunch spot the students go to off-campus and eat there.

Good luck to you!
