Contemplating on quitting piano?!

Question: This is my dilemma. I've been playing piano since I was 6 years old (I am now 16 years old). I am not particularly talented and my technique is lousy. I still can't quite tell if I ever "liked" piano for itself, or for the attention it brought me (to put it bluntly, showing off).

For a few years now, I have become really disappointed in my lack of skill, and playing usually brings me more frustration than joy. I feel like I don't have the willpower to really practice enough to get enough technique. I'm often comparing myself to my musical peers at school who are SO much better than me. Basically, part of the fun of piano for me is being GOOD at it, so I'm pretty much miserable right now. Is that wrong?

I feel like I should quit because I hate when my teacher looks disappointed with me. He's a real nice guy, and I hate to waste his time and efforts (and my parents' money). However, people are always telling me that I will regret later it if I quit.

So, that's where I stand.

I've alway's regretted stopping my guitar lessons for the same reasons. You're peers are better because they practice more, they practice more because they enjoy doing it,and learning something new.Find a simple song that you like and master it,then improvise on it,hold "JAM" sessions with your fellow students,to encourage your practicing.Don't get discouraged, knowing a musical instrument lasts a lifetime. The more you play, the better you will be at it.

if you're miserable: quit! stop making yourself miserable!! there are enough things out there to make you sad and upset , don't let this add to it!! playing piano should bring you joy, and satisfaction, and abviously you're neither! so i'd say: quit!!

I played piano from the ages 7-12.

I wasnt great. My sister who is 4 years older than me was heaps better than me, and that kinda put me down a bit. I felt like I was in her shadow, so I quit.

Im 17, and regret giving it up. I realise (ironically now) that I can only do my best.

I wish I didnt give it up. I would like to still be able to play now, but unfortunantely i cant.

Don't give it up.
