Evel Knievel is an American icon. He was a wild hellion daredevil long before Xgames and extreme sports. He tried to jump over the Snake River Canyon in a rocket motorcycle and although failed, lived to tell of it. His colors were red, white and blue and he was All-American to every broken bone in his body. In a time when all there was to talk about was war and Nixon, Ford ,Carter and Regan, there was also the latest Evil Knievel stunt. We may have only had three channels to watch but every person in America tuned in to see what he would do next. His crashes were legendary. It is unbelievable that he lived through any of them. He was certainly not an angel, but he was America, in all its glory, and pride, even when he crashed and burned. They would prop him up and he would proudly proclaim that this was the greatest country in the world.

his courage!

The Snake River Canyon attempt.

Red, white, and blue. Motorcycles.

When I was little, I seen him jump some cars on his motorcycle- on t.v.
I thought he broke EVERY SINGLE bone in his body & then some!!
But an article I found today said He suffered nearly 40 broken bones before he retired in 1980.

he wore clothes that looked like the flag !

I remember Him Jumping over part of the Grand Canyon
He was like the Fonz On happy days I was young ok.
R.I.P.Evel.

that is terrible did he really die today, l remember watch him on wide world of sport with Howord Cosell l remember he jumped like 14 buses on his motorcycle then l remember another time he jumped over a pool of sharks they did not televise his attempt to jump over the snake river canyon but l remember the news when he did now make it. they said he would surely die if he failed but he servived without a scratch.
l used to set up ramps on the side of my street were my friends and l usedto make jumps on our bicycles we wanted to be like Evel Knievel. l'm so sorry to hear he has died.

I grew up watching his jumps on ABC's Wild World of Sports, it was really cool back then, he had a movie made of his life, he was quite the showman, he is someone that left his mark. He will be remembered.

***I SAW SOME OF HIS STUNTS PERFORMED ON TV AS WELL. I WAS A LITTLE GIRL LAST TIME I SAW HIS STUNTS. I USED TO HAVE AN EVEL KNIEVEL ACTION FIGURE. I WISH I STILL HAD IT, IT MIGHT BE WORTH SOME MONEY BY NOW.***

I loved how patriotic and brave he was...and I was very happy to hear that back in April he asked Jesus into his life and got his Salvation...I'm very sure the Father is setting up a jump for Evel right over one of the planets with his new motorcycle, I'm also very happy he is not suffering anymore as he had a very bad lung disease...Thank you Lord for your Love and Salvation!!!

Well…his leap over the Grand Canyon was met with stifled yawns from around the world. Later that same year, his attempt to drive his motor cycle off the Empire State Building was once again met with derision and sheer, utter boredom. He needed something more impressive, more daring. ABC Wide World of Sports was shelling out big money for National coverage and was quite frankly about to pull the plug on Evil Knievel. It was then that he came up with his most stunning idea. Why not drive his motor cycle off of a moving plane onto a person? The more he thought about it, the more he liked it. He would leap from a plane at a high altitude, on his motor cycle, and attempt to land on someone on a soft alfalfa field below. He presented the idea to ABC, and they loved it! But who would be stupid enough to be the bulls eye on the ground below? What person needed money bad enough?

At that time, Rory Emerald was becoming famous for surviving car accidents. He was paid well for standing in the middle of a highway and letting automobiles crash into him at high speeds. He was a prototype for the Crash test dummy. For some reason, he was able to withstand these severely traumatic events with nary a scratch on his lithe body. “it’s all about conditioning” he commented when interviewed by Howard Cosell of Wide World of Sports. He was approached by ABC, and offered $100,000 to accept the role of Bulls eye target for the stunt, which was tentatively scheduled by Saturday, May 17, 1976, just outside of Houston, Texas. An estimated 30 million viewers were glued to their TV sets that balmy Saturday afternoon. Weather conditions were wonderful, and the Piper L-35 gained an altitude of 11,342 feet before Evil drove out the side door, full throttle.

Evil flew through the sky, like a descending hawk, going for it’s prey, the nose of the bike pointing straight down. The crowd gasped as the motorcycle landed right on Mr. Emerald’s testicles, and the orgasmic groan that emitted from Mr. Emerald’s throat was captured by a mike placed near his head. The incident brought world wide fame to both the rider and to Rory Emerald. The infamous “Family Jewels Jump” was one of the most famous and successful jumps of Mr. Knievel’s illustrious career, and basically put Rory Emerald on the map. The interview, conducted right after the jump, by Howard Cosell is also a landmark in television history.

so basically his "Family Jewels Jump" is my best memory

I say him at work one day. That was about 12 years ago. It was interesting to see him. I won't say where I worked because I might be violating confidentially laws.

i remember a lot about Evel Knievel, the main thing being that he was the greatest man of the entire twentieth century, who did things that, as boys at school we only dreamed of doing.
