What do you look for when having someone critique your music?!

Question: I have been writing for 15+ years but have been very protective of my stuff {lyrics and original character fiction}} Recently I have allowed my best friend to read some of my fiction. I then allowed some family members to read it. Now I would like to do the same with my music. What are some good things should I have them to listen for? Or possibly to even watch for? I do not believe that even though they are family and close friends that they will hold back on sincere advice and opinions. I'd like to know some things I should maybe ask them to listen/look for? Thanks everyone!

Every song needs a hook, a memorable lyric phrase or melody line that will stand out and is repeated often. Songs must have an emotional element, the listener needs to "feel" something. Songs need to have a good tune, you want to see people bobbing their heads, tapping feet, etc.

Lyrics should NOT be cliches, we've heard such things a thousand times and its gotten boring. Originality is best.

If you are serious about pitching a song to someone that could get you a deal copyright it! It costs $30 and you can do it online. That way you know it's protected.

If you are trying to get a record deal or a publishing deal, you should find an A&R person from a label or an entertainment attorney. Most labels (especially majors) will NOT accept unsolicited material.

You should read 'All You Need to Know About the Music Business' by Donald S. Passman. It is an excellent book which I am reading for my music business class.
