Don't get just a guitar -- get a starter pack. They come with a case or gig bag and other goodies like straps, picks, extra sets of strings and even books. Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez all have good acoustic guitar starter packs. Squier, Epiphone, and Ibanez all have good electric guitar starter packs. Check out this website for the best prices on musical equipment and gear:

P.S.: Gibson and Martin both make excellent-quality guitars, but the good ones are VERY expensive. You're better off with a starter pack because they're relatively inexpensive and you won't spend a fortune on something you may decide you don't want to play later.

start off with an accoustic

Get the best one you can afford. If acoustic - strive for a Martin. If electric - you want the Gibson Les Paul. With these guitars, you can play them a lifetime, with true sound. If you get a cheaper guitar, you will likely want to upgrade in a few years, and with prices the way they are - a better guitar will cost you more down the line.

Depends on the type of music you are wanting to play, each maker has different styles which fits into different catagories. I would go to a music supplies store or a guitar store and ask there opinion

Buy the cheapest guitar you can find. 99% of people who buy a musical instrument never learn to play it. If by chance you learn more than 4 chords, you can always buy a better instrument later.

An inexpensive acoustic would be the most logical choice.

But the coolest choice would be a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Sunburst.
