yet at the time
many thought truth was that
Southern man dont need no Neil to tell them what they already know
yet to also let the whole world know
that to those who were born and raised there and have kin there Sweet Home Alabamy is still Home of the heart and each has indeed done what could be done
Much similar could well be said TODAY about the USA
so many of us do what we can
yet we still love America in spite of what goes on and goes out from the white house

It's a response to Young's anti-racist, anti-cross burning songs called "Southern Man" and "Alabama". Lynyrd Skynyrd's comeback was intended to mean. He basically meant, "Thank you for your opinion Neil, now leave us alone."

Neil Young had just done a song called 'Southern Man' that basically talked about the racism of the white Southern man and slavery etc, and they wrote that song in reponse to it.
