How should you piece together a song?!

Question: Like, how many lines in the chorus and stuff like that. Any other advice?

Depends on what kind of song you are writing. The best thing to do, even before considering chords and progresssions or verses and chorus's would be think of a good title. The title of the song is going to represent the entire meaning behind it. once you got that down, consider a few different chord progressions; If it's a sad song, throw in some minor or augmented chords. If it's a more positive one, use majors and upbeat chords. It all comes down to what kind of message you're trying to throw out there.

For song writing, Good GAWD there are hundred of rhyming patterns you could go with. Sometimes the basic is good, like this:

He had a small tree
that waved in the sky
it told him be free
it begged him to fly

Or use different rhyming patterns like a limerick:

He stood on the stage with a friendly smile
and the crowd looked upon him in glee
And with a wave of his hand
out came the band
and the stadium rose up to their feet

Billy Joel made this styling popular in his song Piano Man.
Too many stylings and ideas, honestly write whatever you think sounds good down and take it from there.

A basic song with versing might be:
Verse
Verse
Pre-Chorus
Chorus
Fill-in
Verse
Verse
Pre-Chorus
Chorus
Solo
It could be three chorus's after that or end it with a solo. The beauty of music is that it's like an canvas. Da Vinci expressed and experimented with so much imagination until he found something to base the piece from. A chorus can be one word if it makes you happy, or it could be free verse, or no rhyming in it at all; Songs don't have to rhyme to be a hit, just something everyone can relate to.

I hope a few of these ideas helped. It's almost impossible to give a truly detailed answer to your question, because I tell you this one idea, and someone else will tell you another, et cetra et cetra. The mind is limitless, and so is your capability. Always question the normal and add your little twist.

Ten minutes can change a crowd, but sometimes ten seconds and define a generation. Good luck with your song writing. I hope to see you in Rolling Stones one day.

Cheers.

Be creative. Don't use formulas. Do something different.

Or if you really don't know where to start... If you really want a template to use.. Pick out one of your favorite songs and try to write a song that's similar.

I find it easier to write the lyrics first, and there's no right or wrong answer as to a pattern. There have been hundreds of different patterns for verses and choruses. Once you know your lyrics then choose a sound that best suits the emotion of the words; love, anger, depression, etc. I recommend listening to some of the songs that most inspire you and follow that kind of pattern.
