How hard is it to learn to play the keyboard/piano?!

Question: I would say that the piano or keyboard is one of the hardest instruments to be able to play fluenty quickly (other than perhaps the harp or the melotron). The main thing you'll need is commitment and a real willingness to practice and want to play.

I first started playing the organ when I was 7. I had lessons up to the age of 15, and I had passed Grade 7 by this point. I then joined a band and bought a keyboard, and basically adapted the quite technical playing I had learnt to a more fun and fluid approach. (more what I wanted to play).

I learnt a great deal from playing in bands, listening and imitating other professional and amateur musicians. I am now 29 and would consider myself proficient in keyboard playing for a band, but certainly not polished at classical pieces!

I have since picked up the guitar and the drums and can play these to a basic standard with no tuition.

I know one person who learnt the piano without any lessons by imitation only, and of course, Jools Holland did it by just listening to old R&B records. So just decide what sort of thing you want to play, get a bit of tuition and then get your head down for some old fashioned practice!

Good luck!

playing keyboard is quite easy. playing piano is very hard. keyboard meaning just chords and harmonies with a live band. piano meaning playing music scores and solo parts and classical music.
