One of the hardest things to do: get noticed.
First thing you need is research. Find out the hotspots, the hot bands to open for, listen to the competition (maybe to perfect yourself), and then find a way to place gigs there. In most situations, it'd be cheaper to sell the music yourself for awhile (be amazed with the advent of CD-Rs how many bands have switched independent, and the internet makes it easier). If you are lucky, maybe an agent will get word of you. If the agent approaches, answer honestly, be willing and open, and make sure you're willing to dedicate a bit of life to it. Most of the older bands can attest that it takes time, some money, and sweat to get a career in music. Good Luck!
