What are the most esential effects pedals for an intermediate guitarist?!

Question:

What are the most esential effects pedals for an intermediate guitarist?

I want to get about 2-3 to start out with, so what would you recomend? If possible, what is the best heavy distortion pedal avialble?

Answers: Judging by your question, i assume you are into rock/metal. 2-3 pedals are a good start, good choice. For this setup, you'll need a main drive pedal, a boost pedal, and an extra pedal of your choice. (Note: i'll give you recommendations based on the pedals i have tried, so i suggest you try out a variety of pedals so you can choose the best that would would fit the sound you like).

Now for the pedals. Your basic pedal will be your main drive pedal. Get a distortion pedal. I would suggest a Boss DS-1 (this is what i use as my main pedal, just don't go beyod 10 'o clock on the tone). Do check out distortion pedals of DOD and Iba?ez too. If you want a heavier tone, get a Metal Zone. For your 2nd pedal, you have the choice of getting a boost pedal or another wild card. I suggest you get a boost pedal if your are 2 guitarists in your band, or if you need an increase in power. For this, get an Overdrive pedal. You have a lot of choices, from Boss ODs to DOD tube screamers. Try them out with your main drive pedal, and if the blend sounds good, you now have an OD. The third pedal is a wild card of your choice. You can either get a wah, phaser/flanger, tremolo, delay, etc. It's up to you on what type of effect you would want.

Good luck, and hope that helps
