Is its legal to DJ with burnt CDs?!

Question:

Is its legal to DJ with burnt CDs?

I've been a DJ now for over 7 years using both CD and vinyl playing almost all genres including Dance, Urban and mainstream chart. However over the years there has been a major move to MP3 in all genres and many new websites offering cheaper downloads with, what appears to be, the idea that we can use the MP3s for use in clubs/pubs/public use.

Unfortunately none of these sites say in their T's & C's that we can use the tunes for public use, they are only for private. I've phoned up some of these sites and they say that everyone is doing it but they cannot say that in their sites until the PPL allow them to. SO I called the PPL who say that they don't have a problem with us using burnt CDs if the web sites allow you to do so!!!

My venue already has the relevant PPL licences for having performers but it doesn’t cover burnt media. I don’t want a digital licence as that would involve paying for a new laptop AND the licence itself. So what does one do??? HELP!!!

Should you have any questions that are not answered on the website, please email digitaldj@ppluk.com or call the Digital DJ Team on 020 7534 1131.

are they your burnt cd's or the clubs ?
who ever they belong to needs the license.
why do you need a new laptop to do it ?
venues may refuse to let you play if you can not demonstrate that your digital files are properly licensed Yeah go and ask the manager or your boss or something and ask him wat the down low is i wouldnt stress it!... the chances of getting caught are quite minimal... and if you do get caught the fine will probably be less tha a licence........ I would use nice fresh CDs, not crusty old damaged ones. well as long as you have the original, i cant see it being a problem. as you already have the relevant licence from the performing rights society, it shouldnt be an issue.

also as for downloads, you have legally purchased them, so again, this isnt a problem either.

if you want more advice. phone the performing rights society
