Clarinet help please?!

Question:

Clarinet help please?

I am a freshmen in high school and this is my first year so far with playing the clarinet, and i am improved so much this year that I am second clarinet and once I got to play first clarinet, so anyway what my question was, was that how do I become a better player this summer once school is out and be able to play first clarinet next year? And any other advice for the clarinet, like which reed and size is good for certain player, because you use michel Lurie's reeds and i use 3.5 size, well thanks

Answers:

Well if you're going to get really serious with clarinet playing I would buy a Buffet Crampon R-13 clarinet. They have a really good dark tone in the lower registers. And a really clear sound in the higher registers.
They go for around 2,500-3,000 US$ in most dealers. But it's best if you can get it used from another person. They're much cheaper and the quality of the clarinet doesn't really change over time. For mouthpieces try them out! You will find the mouthpiece that fits you perfectly eventually. I use a Vandoren Lyre mouthpiece but I really wouldn't recommend it for long term playing. Metal ligatures are HORRIBLE. They stifle the vibration of the reed and can give you a stuffy sound. Try getting string ligatures or other ligatures that allows the reed to vibrate freely. If you MUST use a metal mouthpiece, use one that spreads pressure evenly and doesn't squeeze the reed.

Don't just practice hard.
Practice smart. Work on your tone, flexibility, and posture in a smart manner. Playing scales over and over isn't going improve you much. Know what you're practicing. If it seems boring and repetitive after a while, play something else!
Practice hard, smart, and joyfully.
Enjoying your instrument is the first step into becoming a good player.
