Apocalypse Now...OR...Platoon?!

Question:

Apocalypse Now...OR...Platoon?

Which is better in your opinion? I've just watched Full Metal Jacket and have discovered a hidden love for great war films! I want to buy one tonight. Which one?

Answers:

Both are excellent Vietnam War movies. "Apocalypse Now" gets my vote for sheer poetry, incredible acting, superb directing, stunning cinematography and overall memorability. It's iconic, and it will stay with you forever. Platoon has many great scenes, some memorable characters, but is a bit preachy and heavy-handed. Well above average, though.

If you're a true artist, and you prefer storylines and good acting over simple explosions and gunplay, you owe it to yourself to watch "The Deer-Hunter".

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching war film of all time, though, is Gallipoli (co-starring a young Mel Gibson) by Peter Weir. 1981.

For a bit of 1960's fun and a host of famous faces, check out "Kelly's Heros" . See how many faces you can name!

Another classic WW2 drama with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton: "Where Eagles Dare". Very cool soundtrack.

If you like the 60's war movies, you're gonna love "The Great Escape". Even more famous names and faces than "Kelly's Heros". Classic scene with Steve McQueen.

You are wise to ask around because for every excellent classic war movie there are a thousand real stinkers. Look for films with good actors, good directors, that have won awards.
