How hard is it to learn how to play a guitar by yourself?!
Question:
How hard is it to learn how to play a guitar by yourself?
I'll be having alot of free time this summer and I like the guitar instrument and I'm thinking about getting on/learning how to play one. The problem is that I don't feel like getting a teacher. How hard is it to learn by yourself? Is it possible?
Also, my budget is around 500 USD. Can I get a decent electric guitar and amp for that price?

Wow, that bad...
What's the cost of a teacher usually run up to?
Answers:
500$ is plenty to buy a decent guitar and small amp... of course the more you spend the better you get..... I would recommend used gear(maybe from a used music store where you can try it out first) I've been playing music for over 10 years and some of the best guitars I've had have been used.....
I taught myself how to play bass, guitar and keyboard... it is alot harder(or should i say time consuming) to learn yourself but, i think you absorb alot more that way as well...
here are some suggestions for you if you decide to go for it..
1. practice a little every day( either memorizing chords or learning scales to get a feel for them, different strumming rhythms)
2. there is a wealth of free online info that you can search for including free lessons.
www.chordfind.com
www.guitaretab.com
3.learning the tab of other songs you like can help you get a sound or style that you like
4.experiment( with different effects or picks or a slide)
5. have fun(whats the point if you don't)
if i knew what type of music you were going for i might be able to point you in a direction of what scales and chords or theory you would benefit from but, you can always ask another question on here and some musician would probably help you.
