Answers:

The kit that you mentioned (the Masters Series) will cost upwards of $2,500. That is a SERIOUS drumkit. The greatest myth about drumsets is that you have to spend a whole lot of money for it to sound good. While it is true that an expensive kit will probably sound better, even the best kit will sound like crap if it has cheap heads on it. Likewise, you can make a cheap kit sound pretty decent if you put really good heads on it (and they really aren't that expensive) and tune them really, really well.

That being said, it will be difficult for you to find a decent drumset for $400-$600...although I believe you are on the right track in looking for a Pearl drumset. I've used Pearl exclusively for all of my eighteen years of playing. My first kit was a used Pearl Export five piece with hardware and (crappy) cymbals included. It cost about $500. My suggestion to you is to keep an eye out in your local newspaper and on ebay for used Pearl Exports for sale. Also, if you have a Guitar Center close by, you should check there. At the GC where I used to live, they were recently liquidated their Exports and Export Selects for some ridiculously cheap prices. I'm not sure if that was a nationwide thing, but it's worth checking out.

While you can get cheap drums and make them sound pretty good by choosing good drum heads, there isn't anything you can do for cymbals. You should by the most expensive cymbals that you can afford. Trust me on this...you'll thank me later. And furthermore, if your serious about your drumming you should always hear the cymbals before you buy them, preferably as a set. Most music stores will even let you bring your own cymbals to the store and set them up on a drumset with a cymbal you're thinking about buying and play it to make sure they all sound good together.

I guess that's about it.

Good luck, and happy drumming!
