Clarinet and saxophone?.....same?!

Question:

Clarinet and saxophone?.....same?

If you learn the clarinet, can you also play saxophone? Are the keys the same???

Answers:

The fingerings are different from clarinet to saxophone.

If you are looking to switch, though, it isn't hard because you already know how to read music and that is 3/4 of the battle (lol).

I personally went from clarinet to bass clarinet for a change of pace (and because we were such a small band and my director said he needed more low instruments). The fingers are IDENTICAL . . . well with the exception of the E-flat key on the bottom hand that is added (so instead of four keys, the bass clarinet has five keys) and it is much bigger and lower in tone. A bass clarinet's open G sounds like the low G of the classic (or soprano) clarinet.

Hope that helps.

Feel free to ask me more questions if you have them.
