How do i make vocals sound like they are blended with music?!

Question:

How do i make vocals sound like they are blended with music?

New to sound engineering. I've recorded a song but the vocals sound separate from the music. What techniques do you use to blend them and make them sound good together?

Answers:

It's good that you are aware that there is a "different" sound on your vocal track. The fact that you noticed that indicates you are listening. Ears are your best tool in sound engineering.

The reason your vocal tracks sound 'separate' has to do with how they were recorded and what effects processing you use. If you record vocals through a microphone, (as you must) and everything else was recorded via direct input, (drum machine,
samples, electric guitar through a preamp, etc.) then of course they will sound different.

The fast easy way to fix this is to apply similar effects to the entire mix. Put all your tracks through one or more reverb units. This will create the illusion that the performance happened all at once, "live" in a room.

That method gives you less flexibility.

To create a really coherent mix that also has definition on all the instruments, you must use slightly different effects on each instrument. However, to also make the mix sound coherent, the effects need to be of a similar type. For insatnce...
Try putting vocals through a "room reverb" setting, then send that affected signal through the same reverb as the other instruments, but not with the same amount of reverb.

There are as many opinions on this subject as there are engineers. Also there are too many subtleties that I can't possibly address here in this limited format.

You have to balance the overall effect with the equipment you have, your level of expertise and how much time you want to spend "tweaking."

In general, professional mixers use variations on those two tricks. They may have access to a lot more equipment. They may have a better budget, or more experiance.

Overall, those are the two most effective techniques you can easily try in almost any studio.
Best Wishes!
