It's going to be a long summer. What books, movies, or music do you recommend I !

Question:

It's going to be a long summer. What books, movies, or music do you recommend I check out?

I'm open to all three. I'll be bored, I assume. I'm going into sophomore year in September, and I was just wondering what you intelligent kind people would suggest for me.

I'm really into reading and writing about things like vampires and werewolves, so that'd be an especially good topic.

As far as music, I am very into many generations of rock, despite only being almost 15. British invasion, eighties, current, it's all good, but my musical interest is ever-expanding.

I'll try to work on experiencing all my suggestions, but I can imagine that will take a while.

Anything works. Books that you've read and recommend, a local band's MySpace page, anything.

In advance, Thanks a lot everybody! I appreciate your suggestions and intake.

Rock on and enjoy your summer.

Answers:

If you're a fan of vampire fiction, you've probably been through all the Anne Rice books, but if not, you should. Also, there is a series of graphic novels by Steve Niles (of '28 Days Later' fame), the first of which is '30 Days of Night' - very cool vampire story, but of course they're only graphic novels, so they won't take you long to get through.

As for music, if you're a fan of the British Invasion, summer is the perfect season to discover Ska - check out The Specials, The Skatellites, Desmond Dekker et al, or try to find a ska compilation (there's a great one out in the UK just now, but they might be hard to find where you are). Also, go for some good old-fashioned early NY punk- The Ramones, NY Dolls, etc (keep in mind these guys were NOT good musicians, they were a moment in time, and if you're a real music fan, you need to know about them). Also, The Violent Femmes (better musicians, a little later, and from Milwaukee, of all places). Also, while I'm at it, to really give you something to sink your teeth into, go back to the roots of American music with Robert Johnson (reportedly the evilest man ever to play the Delta Blues - you're a fan of horror fiction, check out his legend), Louis Jordan (some of the best vocal jazz ever recorded, so hot it's cool - and often funny!), and Louis Armstrong. Last, if you really want your mind blown, get some Frank Zappa. That's at least a summer's worth of expanded musical interest.

Sorry if I went on a bit, kinda got into it - have a great summer!
