How did the Smashing Pumpkins get Paris Hilton to agree to this??!

Question:

How did the Smashing Pumpkins get Paris Hilton to agree to this??

This is the cover of the new Pumpkins single "Tarantula".

The Smashing Pumpkins don't strike me as the kind of band that would like Paris Hilton so I would say the single cover is designed to deride her especially with atom bomb going off in the back ground.

What do you think the Smashing Pumpkins are trying to say with this single cover? Why are they associating themselves with Paris Hilton? What does it all mean??

Kaisar - I know but I think that they are trying to insult her or something.

I think I might have just figured it out - Maybe they are saying that the rest of the world is going to pieces (represented by the atom bomb) and she and others like her are just oblivious with their nice clothes and their blackberrys and big smiles. Any thoughts?

I know I am talking completely to myself here but I had another idea. Maybe it is for us to think about what has had the worse effect on society - the creation of the atom bomb or the creation of celebrities like Paris Hilton.

I like your two most recent responses there. In the last tour the Pumpkins did back in 2000 I remember Billy railing against the boy bands and "fake titty girl singers" (as he called them) that were all the rage back then. I think part of the answer to why they chose this cover is in the title of the album it is from, Zeitgeist. The meaning of the word zeitgeist is "spirit of the age," the basic intellectual, cultural, and moral climate of a time. The Pumpkins are questioning whether this is really what we are about now--fake celebrities and expensive gadgets. Is this the path to destruction?
