Answers:

Are you refering to the Zig-Zag Woman? If you are, it's a trick box with a wide "bar" on one side and the assistant's face, hands and one foot are sticking out of holes in the doors. The wide bar on the side does not allow for the middle box to go all the way to the one side. THAT'S where she hides to avoid the blades. The blades also have tricked handles that cause the blade to slide farther away from the girl, thereby giving her more room. There are several variations where the divided box is spun around and the assistanmt has vanished, another version where the middle box is completely removed and yet another version where the box is COMPLETELY taken apart and the 3 boxes rolled all over the stage on rolling tables before being put back together. There's even a version (I've seen this version performed in a circus by clowns) where a tall assistant is divided and the middle box is completely removed but, while one clown is taking the middle box for a "ride", the top box falls onto the bottom box and the blades fall out with a shorter assistant getting out of the box.
