HD or Blue Ray?!

Question:

HD or Blue Ray?

Honestly what are they? I've seen how much the DVD's cost and I want to cry. You must feel like you're in the movie or something close to it for someone to pay 30 or more dollars for a movie? What do they do? What are the differences if any? and are buying those overly expensive DVDs worth it? Does anyone else think that they are too expensive or is it just me that wouldn't spend over 20 bucks for a movie?

Answers:

What are they? The simple answer is that they are discs that have more storage capacity. A DVD stores up to 8.5 GBs, a HD DVD currently stores up to 30 GBs (with plans to expand), and a Blu Ray up to 50 GBs (also working on a bigger disc). With the added disc space, they can store movies in HD resolution and with uncompressed sound. In short, better video and audio. That's the main difference.

Both require special players to play them. An HD DVD will only play in an HD DVD player. Blu Rays will only play in a Blu Ray player. Both will also play DVDs as well.

As for cost, it's higher now since the technology is new. It'll come down in time. Still, the price for a movie isn't bad. Many retail for the same price as a new DVD (around $30 MSRP). Some, particularly the new releases, have a higher MSRP, but nothing higher than $40. But that's before any discounts. Many stores will discount DVDs, but few are discounting either HD DVDs or Blu rays. So you have to be careful where to buy if you want them. They're still good deals out there, and it's nice to have optimum video and audio that's available today.
