Any tips for a new bassist?!

Question:

Any tips for a new bassist?

One of my coworkers offered me his bass for $50. I would like to know about anything that would make learning it easier. Any books, DVD's, or just tips would be great! Things like finger positions, finger picking method, or anything along those lines would be greatly appreciated.

I know how to play a 6 string (I own 4 $700 guitars and a $1,200 amp just to clue you in) and I would like to know how to play a bass.

Please don't recommend that I take lessons. I work 2 full time jobs 6 days a week, and I don't have time to go to lessons. I need ways to make teaching my self easier.

Thank you!

Do you play with your thumb or your fingers, and how? Any special way?

Answers:

I learned to play the bass when my friend handed me one and said "We need a bassist. Here you go".

I just bought tab and score music for songs that I knew really well and went from there. The fact that I'd played violin for some years probably helped. I guess with your background in music a similar attitude would work for you. If you like early RHCP, flea is an excellent bassist to study.

I worked out all the method for myself, so who knows if it was right. I found you could get some good punky sounds playing the bass with a pick like a rhythm guitar (really going for it, especially higher up the fretboard), although most musicians would probably look down on that method.

Try a combination of finger picking, popping and slapping and plectrum style and see what floats your boat. Being a bassist is all about the 'tude. ;o)
